Dr. Joseph P. Barrion is a highly skilled board-certified ophthalmologist and laser refractive surgeon. With over 18 years of refractive surgery experience, he has performed over 12,000 procedures including SMILE, LASIK, PRK, refractive lens exchange, and ICL surgeries.
Dr. Barrion is a 30-year Navy military veteran who has been privileged to operate on astronauts, snipers, fighter pilots and special forces personnel. He emphasizes building trust, creating a positive patient experience and providing exceptional care from start to finish.
He graduated from the University of Maryland with a double major in Microbiology and Genetics before receiving his medical doctorate degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Barrion completed a surgery internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and his ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Dr. Barrion has a strong passion for laser vision corrective surgery and empowers his patients to make informed decisions after fully discussing their individualized treatment options. He regularly volunteers to teach all of the latest refractive surgery techniques to residents and cornea fellows from NMCSD, UCSD, Loma Linda and UCSF training programs. For his efforts he has earned multiple Teacher of the Year awards.
Dr. Barrion is an avid golf enthusiast and pickleball fanatic. He enjoys sightseeing with his children and wife, who is also a laser refractive surgeon.
