The Spookiest Things To See In California This Halloween

Yep, it’s that time of year again. Halloween is around the corner, and that means everyone actually wants to be scared silly. But if you’ve been experiencing the same old spooky sights (and sites) year after year, we’ve got some surprises in store for you.

It turns out California is full of all kinds of ghoulish delights. And we’ve got a list of the top must-see “haunts” in the state. Word has it they are actually haunted. But it’ll take a visit for you to make the call. Your next scare could be just a short drive away, if you dare…

Spooky California Sites to see with your new SIGHT

  • The Del Monte Speakeasy in Venice

Venice, Los Angeles is home to a lot of weird things—including the Del Monte Speakeasy. With a 1930’s charm, the old owner, Frank Bennett, is reported to still hang around the old-school bar. Not strange enough? Frank died years ago. But that, and the purported hair-pulling, doesn’t keep anyone away from the popular hangout. Add it to your list of haunts for this year. Check it out.

  • The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles

Hollywood may be a land of dreams, but for others, it could unlock nightmares. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a great place to stay if you want to check out the nearby TLC Chinese or Dolby theaters, or the Walk of Fame. It’s also a great place to stay if fear is what you seek—especially if you’re into famous ghosts. Once a place for movie premiers, the hotel has had a star-studded past (and still attracts upscale adults living the good life). Word has it that Marilyn Monroe, who loved this place, still haunts her favorite room (#1200). Some people say they’ve received a tap on the shoulder from Montgomery Clift who still lingers around room 928. Want to check it out for yourself? Check it out. Definitely a sight to see.

Sites You Have To Get in Your Sight Soon!

  • The Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey

The southern portion of the campus used to facilitate recovery for victims of the Spanish flu. Today, the portion of this rehab center is largely abandoned. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a scary history. A nearby field was turned into a burial ground in the early 1900s for victims of disease, earthquake and flood—and word has it they still haunt the grounds to this day. Check it out.

  • The Old Zoo at Griffith Park

You’ll feel the creepiness factor from the moment you step foot into the abandoned zoo. Stone caves where the animals used to live such a spooky sight! (and that you can explore if you dare) are said to still be home to animal spirits, giving rise to the cries of animals of old. Check it out.

Or check out these scary events and haunted happenings.

  • Sinister Pointe’s Scary Place

Sick of the popular amusement park haunts? While there’s no denying Knott’s Scary Farm is still absolutely terrifying, Sinister Pointe’s Scary Place in Laguna Hills puts an indie spin on the scare. Check it out.

  • Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Test your courage (or your fear) in the 5 zones of what might be the spookiest place in town. Take a haunted hayride, use your good sight to venture into an eerie maze where you’ll experience a plethora of dark adventures, and with any luck, run right into the boogeyman. Check it out.

  • Scream Zone at Del Mar Fairgrounds

A House of Horror. A Haunted Hayride. Karnevil (where Fairy Tales become Scary Tales). Can you hold back the screams? Do you even want to? It’s the largest haunted event in San Diego County. It’s just a quick drive down from Los Angeles too! Check it out.
